Jose Bermeo studied Engineering at the Universidad Nacional de Colombia. In 2001 he obtained his M.Sc. in Industrial Engineering at the University de los Andes (UA), Colombia. After that, in 2005, he was a Visiting Scholar at Oxford University at the Clarendon Institute, UK. During his PhD studies he worked in the Department of Industrial Engineering at UA as a Teaching Assistant. Later, in 2006, he was at the University of St. Gallen in Switzerland as a Research Associate. In 2010 he obtained his doctorate with a thesis on Second Order Cybernetics at UA, where his supervisors were Markus Schwaninger and Roberto Zarama. Working together, they developed a methodology called ‘Observing the Observer’ and associated cybernetic models of learning and teaching.

Between 2010 and 2014 Bermeo qualified as a lecturer on graduate and undergraduate programmes at the University of the Andes. From 2012 to 2013 he also worked as Managing Director of the Dialogue Institute (DI) in Bogotá, Colombia. DI is a non-profit organisation devoted to promoting the use, teaching, research, and development of conversational techniques.

Bermeo’s research and teaching are focused on Second Order Cybernetics and Systems thinking, with methodological emphasis on Organisational Cybernetics, Social Cybernetics, and the importance of dialogue in organisations. Bermeo is author of various publications and a peer reviewer of different journals and institutions such as the Colombian Institute of Science and Technology (Colciencias). He is, at present, working as an independent researcher and academic based in London.
